Finishing Up in Chicago-land

There hasn't been much time for blogging in the past week, which means two things:
  • We've had a lot of incredibly special times with people across Illinois, Indiana and Michigan
  • We're almost finished with our time here in the Midwest

On Friday afternoon, Dave and the kids (at what ages do you stop calling them "the kids"?! By kids I mean Tyler and Lara, Caleb and Claire) head out by car to Denver. They'll be seeing a lot more of these scenes as they make their way across Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska before coming into Colorado.

Since our car only seats five passengers, I'll be flying to Colorado on Friday afternoon - missing out on all these beautiful farm scenes. (Hey, someone has to sacrifice, you know?!)

I'll get in Friday night, while they're driving through the night. Pray for safe travels for them, please!

They will arrive sometime on Saturday, hopefully just in time for our niece's rehearsal dinner on Saturday evening! Her wedding is Sunday evening, which kicks off a week of Patty family reunion at the "homestead" in Englewood!

In twenty six years of marriage, this will be the first time that the entire family (mom, dad, the four Patty kids and all their families) has been together for Christmas.

Yes, it's going to be rather epic! And I hope there will be some blog posts somewhere along the way to commemorate this special occasion.

In the meantime, we've got to wrap up things here in the Chicago area these next two days as we won't be back until April. I don't know how the time went by so fast, but it sure was a great time here!

My New Team

Most people wouldn't know this about me, but I grew up on sports.

No, not as a participant per se (though I WAS on my junior high volleyball and basketball team!), but as an avid spectator. Whatever we had going on at our house on the week-end, most Saturdays at 5 o'clock found my dad, brother and I watching Wide World of Sports (mom always made sure we had snacks for the weekly party).

Basketball, baseball, football, water sports, skiing, golf, even bowling...we watched most everything there was to watch in sports during the late 60's and early 70's.

Except for hockey.

That wasn't a big sport where I grew up in Oregon - maybe that's why we didn't watch. Maybe it wasn't even on Wide World of Sports (though I assume it was and we just turned it off!). I really don't ever remember seeing or hearing much about hockey until literally twenty years ago when we moved to the Czech Republic.

And THEN I got acquainted with hockey! Oh yes...that is most definitely a big sport where we come from there. If you're Czech, you know and love hockey.

Well, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration...though honestly, not much.

While I've been a couple times, it never grabbed me and made me want to be a hockey fan.

Until tonight.

After my first Blackhawk's game tonight in Chicago, I'm hooked!

It's fast paced, intense, and gritty. I understand the game, the fans are fun, the company was delightful (thanks F & W for the invite and time together!), and I was happy to cheer and yell as if those Hawks were "my team".

Who knew that my time in the States would result in me becoming a hockey fan? Seriously, I may have just found something new to follow.

That was plain old good fun tonight!! I really like hockey after all!!

Joy in the World

If you follow Advent you know this is week three, and that tomorrow we celebrate "joy" in preparation for the celebration of Christmas in just ten days.

When this day started, little did I know what a day of joy it would be - perfect preparation for my heart during this Advent.

Dave and I picked up Claire in the city last night and brought her out to the suburbs where we're staying. She's studying for finals at Moody, and thought she'd get more done in the quiet.

I'm not sure that exactly happened, but we sure experienced a lot of joy today!

Awwww, these two girls!! How I love them! Hayley Ellenwood (Claire's childhood friend from Czech who is studying here in the Chicago area as well) joined us for lunch in Wheaton.

It could not have been sweeter spending time with these two, talking non-stop with much laughter and smiles all through lunch.

Having grown up in Czech, a culture where tea is an essential part of life, these two had a great time visiting Serene Teaz downtown Wheaton, sniffing and sampling all sorts of delightful teas while I did my normal thing: snapping photos of them!

Christmas music was playing out in the open air as we walked downtown Wheaton, popping into cute little stores here and there. It could not have been a more idyllic afternoon setting, soaking in the Christmas cheer and joy.

But...as if that wasn't enough: the joy continued!

Claire's other best childhood friend from Czech, Lucy Rose Till, came to meet us downtown Wheaton (she studies at Wheaton College), along with her friend, Sheldon. What a sweet time connecting with them. I was in mom/aunt/friend bliss being with all these precious ones I have known for years, and love dearly.

So my heart is ready for week three of Advent, having just experienced a day so full of joy that my heart is nearly bursting!

Come Lord Jesus! You are my reason for joy in this world.

The Midwest's Best

It's a balmy 14 degrees tonight here in Ft. Wayne, IN where we've been the past few days. That's warm compared to what it was just a few days ago in the Chicago area...the man in line next to me at the post office said it was -14F with the windchill.

Oh Midwest winter...it is upon us!

That's ice on the road and windshield!

But the Midwest is about a lot more than just cold weather.

It's about time with dear people we love. Breakfasts, lunches, dinners and coffees - what a privilege, catching up with beloved friends here in this part of the States. So very special.

Do you feel the same way as we do...like we know some of the most awesome people in the world??!!

Go hug some of those people in your lives today! And tell them why you think they're so awesome!

Grateful for these Days

When church ended yesterday, it was snowing beautifully outside - those perfect snowflakes that stay on your nose and eyelashes! :)

Since everyone was at church, I couldn't resist a family photo. It's so special to have these days together with our kids!

Woke up this morning to blue sky and a pretty snow scene out back of where we're staying right now.

So grateful for these days.

Dear Friends

I love everything about this picture, and the people in it!

One of the great joys of this sabbatical year is connecting with dear friends around the United States, such as Jerry and Sue Twombly in Indianapolis. Dave met Jerry at the European Leadership Forum in Hungary years ago, and we've loved he and his wife ever since!

Oh, and I got my fill of doggy love at their house too...aren't those four adorable?!

We're back in Chicago now for two weeks, visiting with other dear friends, and seeing a bit more of our kids too! :)

These are sweet days.

Heart Sisters

I have started this blog post about ten times, trying to figure out how to express my heart and thoughts about the past few days with these dear friends.

Thirty years ago, these precious women and I began to serve in Germany with Cadence International/Malachi. We were young, single, just out of college and at the beginning of an adventure that would profoundly shape all of our lives.

As we served and loved teenagers on US military bases, we shared lots of life together too: late nights, days off, road trips, vacations, holidays, autobahns, retreats, love lives, heartaches, laughter and oh so much more.

We've been in each others' weddings, at the births of children, at funerals. We've cried, laughed, comforted and rejoiced with each other, sharing in the joys and heartaches of life, even after we moved to different parts of the US and Europe.

Nineteen years ago, after Laura and I had already moved to Czech and Poland, the six of us met together in Germany for our first reunion.

It was the last time we were all together until this past Sunday.

However, we began writing each other every month shortly after that, and have kept it up all these years. We each have two months in the year that are "our month" when we write the others with news, thoughts, depths of our hearts and prayer requests.

I always know that these sweet sisters will be thinking of me and praying for me in February and August, as I do for them in their months the rest of the year.

With Laura and I planning to be in the States this fall, we realized that it was finally feasible for the six of us to reunite from our corners of the world: Oregon, California, Colorado, Poland and Czech.

Thus, the second reunion of the "Reunion 6", as we call ourselves, began Sunday evening after the Thanksgiving week-end, with a drive up to Breckenridge, Colorado.

Curled up in the home of friends, we began hours of sharing face to face instead of just through letters.

Jerri

Each of us had an hour and fifteen minutes to share past, present and future - anything we wanted our sisters to know and hear from our heart.

Laura

Though it felt like it could never be enough time, the Lord multiplied it as we sat for hours sharing, listening to each other, and speaking words of encouragement and love: heart sisters in person rather than from afar.

Ruth

As I sat in that room with these precious friends, I felt a welling up of such deep emotion, more than I can even express. But so very grateful for how they have profoundly impacted my life for thirty years. The commitment, love, and depth of friendship between us is almost impossible to describe. They mean so much to me.

Lori

For thirty years we have spoken words of truth, love, exhortation, and comfort. We have cheered, grieved, trusted God and believed Him for each other. We have sought to be a sounding board and a safe place, loving each other through growth and change in our lives.

My life has been so deeply enriched and blessed by these sisters in Christ.

Joyce

We left with a continued commitment to one another. It's our desire and plan to stand with each other in life, for as many years as the Lord gives us here on this earth, and for the tens of thousands beyond that into eternity.

These are lifelong friendships with women I absolutely love and adore. Oh how thankful I am for each one of them.

Of course because of that saying goodbye was not easy. It never is.

But I know we each left feeling nourished, blessed, believed in, encouraged, loved. And oh so full of the presence of Christ for having been together.

Jerri, Joyce, Laura, Lori and Ruth: The grace of the Lord be with each of you, my dear heart sisters. I love, adore, enjoy and celebrate each of you! My heart already longs for the next time we will be together in the same room.

Yes, amidst the seriousness, there is a lot of hilarity and laughter too! How could it be any different?!
